After Historic Primary Win, Xavier Becerra Opens General Election Campaign Visiting with Voters & Small Business Owners at Mercado la Paloma in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA – Just days after his primary victory, former HHS Secretary and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra returned today to a South Los Angeles community he represented in Congress for two decades to meet with voters and highlight small, local businesses.

“Mercado la Paloma reminds me why I got into public service,” said Secretary Becerra. “These are small business owners that started with nothing but a dream and a community willing to bet on them – and they made it. That’s the California I’m fighting for, and as governor I’ll work hard to make sure everyone can afford to take that same chance on themselves.”

Mercado La Paloma is a community marketplace in the Figueroa Corridor of South Los Angeles, operated by Esperanza Community Housing Corporation. It offers affordable retail space, business resources, and a platform for local artists — giving small businesses and creative entrepreneurs the tools to grow.

While discussing the race with local voters at the market, Becerra emphasized key issues he will focus on as Governor. ”California voters delivered a mandate on election night: fix our housing crisis, bring down the cost of living and protect health care. That’s the agenda,” said Becerra.
