Becerra for Governor 2026
Voters Need to Know
Big Picture
The difference could not be more stark: Their stories show their values. Becerra doesn’t have money or come from connections; his parents were immigrants who came to America with just $12 in their pockets.
Steyer has spent most of his career making money for himself and spending it to promote himself. Becerra has a 35-year career dedicated to public service and fighting for progressive values. While other politicians profit off the public, Xavier Becerra has a lifelong record of protecting people. For example:
- In 1986, Tom Steyer was building his hedge fund, Farallon, with seed money from his wealthy investors, friends, and family, while Xavier Becerra took his first job in public service in California.
- When Tom Steyer was setting up tax shelters in the Cayman Islands, Xavier Becerra was writing laws to take on tax cheats.
- When Tom Steyer profited from investments in private prisons that cage immigrants, Xavier Becerra was voting against the creation of ICE.
- In 2006, while Tom Steyer was making money off Donald Trump’s casinos, Xavier Becerra voted against plans to sell off Social Security to Wall Street.
- In 2008, while Tom Steyer was investing in one of Indonesia’s biggest coal producers, Xavier Becerra backed President Obama’s cap-and-trade climate law.
- In 2009, while Steyer was investing in Big Tobacco, Xavier Becerra co-authored the Affordable Care Act to expand health insurance to more Americans.
- Between 2017 and 2021, while Tom Steyer was running a website petition against Trump to build his campaign email list, Xavier Becerra had sued Trump 122 times and won the cases that saved the ACA and protected Dreamers.
There are countless examples. They all tell the same story.
Democrats Coalescing
In addition, progressive voters on the go need to see Facebook (and other) content showing Democrats coalescing behind Xavier Becerra as the Democrat in the race, including Planned Parenthood, Equality California, California Young Democrats, and others.
Ad Rebuttal
Voters who see the Steyer for Governor ad attacking Xavier Becerra need to know the facts. Steyer is recycling Donald Trump’s discredited MAGA talking points to attack the son of Mexican immigrants on immigration. And Steyer’s doing it with the money he made from his own investments that put kids in cages. While Steyer profited off corporate ICE detention centers, Becerra led and won the landmark lawsuit against the Trump Administration to protect DREAMERS (DACA kids). Xavier Becerra is the son of immigrants, while Tom Steyer profited from the detention centers.
- Steyer’s attack is a discredited MAGA talking point from Donald Trump that’s being recycled and reused by Tom Steyer.
- The truth is: Xavier Becerra inherited the mess at HHS from Donald Trump and worked to clean it up.
- Tom Steyer’s company, Farralon, profited from investments in ICE’s private detention centers. Steyer has spent more than $132 million of that money to try to get elected Governor.
